I'm too young to have seen them play, but from what I've read and heard, it would be Mays easily.

Never saw Mays play (except in Old Timers games at Candlestick where he could still play), but from what I have heard he was hands down the better player.

No question, Mays. Look up his defensive stats. Few covered more ground in center field. Better baserunner, fielder, hit for average AND power. Team leader, tremendous arm. Strong and accurate.

Aaron was great, Mays was greater.

Just the HR's tell a story. Mays hit 660 while playing home games at Candlestick when it was open directly to SF Bay with the win blowing in through center field by day, but even worse at night. Aaron got himself moved to Atlanta so his HR numbers would rise as the ball jumped out of the park ballooning his number to 755. That's only part of the difference.

That wind at Candlestick was no joke. Those night games were so cold it brought tears to my eyes as a little kid.

Hank not even in the top 2! Willie Mays a clear 1. I believe Mays missed a year to military service

I;m old but not that old.

I went to an allstar game at RFK when I was a kid and both those guys were in the game, but all I really remember is Frank Howard hit a home run.

Didn;t really get to see the NL when living in the beltway as both O's and Senators were A.L.

Guess they got it right now though.

In their primes, Mays hands down. The only problem is that Mays hit the wall at a much younger age than Aaron. Aaron was able to stay productive for a few years longer than Mays did so he eclipsed him in stats. That said, you have to take into account defense, home ballpark, and the fact that Mays missed almost a full year in the military. When all is said and done, I'll take Mays, but not by too much.

I will say that Aaron was much better than Clemente. I feel that Clemente is overrated these days a little bit. Yes, he was one of the most graceful players ever, and possibly had one of the best RF arms as well. However, not many know that he only drove in 100 runs twice in his career. He was a hell of a hitter, but I'd say he was more comparable to Tony Oliva than Hank Aaron at the plate.

Wilt Chamberlin said it best about Frank Howard " That's the biggest man I have ever seen, he is a giant."

BADCO, my first MLB game was at RFK Sep 11, 1969 vs Yankees, a 7-3 Washington win.

I was nine years old and overwhelmed.

But recall the Wash DC crowd booing the crap out of Joe Pepitone.

Asked my Dad why, and he (a police officer from Texas) told me, "He wears his hair like a girl."

What he didn't tell me and I didn't learn until years later that Pepitone spoke out against Vietnam war.

Again, I fall in the category of most on this board as being too young to have seen them play and therefore making a fair assessment.

If you said who would I pick first if I had a choice, I would go with Say Hey Willie.

NO doubt WILLIE MAYS

He lost home runs playing at both Candlestick, the La Coliseum for a couple years (on road trips to LA) and of course for first seven years at the Polo Grounds in NYC.

No doubt Willie Mays....could do it all and then some....Aaron was no slouch, for a long time nobody could crack the starting N.L. All Star outfield of Mays, Aaron and Clemente....Glad to be old enough to see all three in their prime...

I hear that it was Mays hands down but that stats speaks differently.
